View Full Version : Which strings for Flatiron F

Mandofriends I need your advice:
When I bought my Flatiron F (Performer) 2nd hand in England
a couple of years ago I was particularly caught by its warm and soft sound (no choppy bluegrass sound, more a little bit folky, like David Grisman's F4 in "The prisoner's waltz " on "Tone Poems I" ). After a while I had to remove the strings, and since then the particular warmth has disappeared, I have tried Martin, GHS, John Pearse, They all sound nicely , bit a little bit too crisp for my taste.
Do you have an idea which strings might meet my expectation of sound.
Kind regards from Germany

I think Thomastik-Infeld strings would be perfect. I use them on a Gibson A2-Z and on a Flatiron 1N. They are warm, soft , and woody - all of the good adjectives. I use the Stark on the Gibson and Mittles on the Flatiron.

Try a set of DR mediums. Ihave used these for years on my Flatiron Festval F and the sound is wonderful. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Have you tried any silk and steels? They don't last that long with heavy playing but I think they would give you the tone your looking for.
