Mentors

I have been lucky to have had 2 mentors Bill Boyd of Almost Bluegrass Band took me under his wing when I started out. set up my 1st mandolin for me, made me learn 4 finger chords let me in his jams took me on stage so I could learn mikes etc. My other mentor was John Hare a fine bass player in Louisville who had some profesionals in his jams. I spent about 2 years in weekly basement jams with John. Kudos to Bill & John so have you had or have a mentor ? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I had a really horrible experience with Frank Wakefield where he didn't show me anything about life or mandolin and broke my mandolin.

Wake Frankfield was an awful mentor for me as well. Sure wish he didn't sell me such a horrible mandolin or invite me up to play w/ him on stage.

I only wish I had a mentor. It seems like every time I meet someone who plays well it is because they do it for a living, so when I try to talk about music with them I feel like I am on the receiving end of the Skynard song "Don't Ask Me No Questions".

I saw a documentary once where Ricky Skaggs was talking about his relationship with Bill Monroe, which made me think about how accessible those guys were back then and how inaccessible they are now days (at least that is my perception).

Some folks like them. I've not had the luck to find a mentor. I've had some good lessons from a primarily guitar player.
