I've heard rumors that these are no longer being made or sold...I tried calling today and wasn't able to get through to anyone at Stewmac...My immediate gratification of wanting the answer led me to all the experts on the forum...Does anyone know if I will be able to get Waverlies for an A mandolin?

So they are making A-Waverlies???...They are just taking a long time?...I didn't see them in the StewMac online catalog... #Hey, I'm a trusting guy http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Most of the time Waverly tuners take a long time. The website has listed them as One month+ for delivery for months. In the beginning the F style tuners weren't on the website either.

Perfect thanks...Does anyone know if it's quicker ordering invidually or having a retail/distributor order them? Do builders tend to have some around that people can purchase?

Get them installed by someone that can do it with the accuracy that the precision machine fit tolerances require.
may require redrilling the peghead holes , if not a new build.

Waverly tuner link off the home page Links on this site.

I have always wanted to replace the tuners on my A Jr with Waverlies. I realize they are expensive but I have had a lot of tuning problems with my old A Jr but I love the tone.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger. I feel like I should work with a luthier though as I have no idea if the wavs will fit the existing holes in the headstock.

They make them in two sizes. One of them should fit.

Oh..another question...what are the 2 sizes? Is it standard and Loar? I thought I saw that with the F-Wavs...

Here (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Mandolin_tuners/1/Waverly_Mandolin_Machines/Specs.html#details) is a link to the spec page on StewMac. The post spacing for both are listed.

sort of.... i would highly recommend a skilled luthier doing this.

in the case of mine, the bushings on the elite tuners were actually wider than the waverlies. because of this, the existing holes had to be filled and redrilled. the waverlies also require a different diameter on the top and bottom of the headstock (in each hole) as the bushings don't go all the way down. you don't want to do this sloppily at all or the high quality tuners will be worthless. stewmac sells a waverly installing tool as well that your luthier may or may not have. not sure the a style ones come in two sizes like the fs. i'd check that.

I called Stew Mac. The A waverlies do not come in two sizes like the F style do. There is not a 'Loar-era' version of the A's like there is for the F's.

FYI.

I'm not giving up though, I'm going to find a good luthier and see if they are willing to take on the task. Seems that Mike Compton had modern waverlies on his A Jr.

I think that the square end tuners that are on my A Jr are actually Waverlies... just 83 year old Waverlies.

It may be that I need to find someone to repair the slipping A string tuner that I have and I'd be all fixed up.

Dunno.

thanks.
