I just changed strings on a "new" to me, used mando. #It played fine and sounded great to me, before the string change.
It's a flat top and from another post I followed the suggestions and went with a light set. #The strings I took off were the size of J74's I had around. #I put on a set of Martin M-400, a lighter gauge. #I noticed the wound strings resting deeper in the nut slots and figured as long as it doesn't buzz it will be alright.
It didn't buzz. #The intonation is set at the 12th fret, as close as my Intelli tuner will show it to be good.
With the open strings in tune, the 7th fret on the G string doesn't match the open D and the 7th fret on the D isn't in tune with the A...........
Then I saw jbmando make this statement in another thread:
"It will probably need a good setup. Nut slot depth is usually a problem on lower priced instruments - too shallow, giving poor intonation around the first five frets."
He's one of the members I find to always give first rate advice and believe this might very well be the cause of my problem.
I am not going to have a new nut installed on this mando. #It's a flat top with the neck joining the body at the tenth fret. #I'm just learning the first position and don't play up the neck anyway. #
Can I move the bridge so that the 7th fret matches the next higher string? #Or should I replace the lighter strings with a heavier gauge like it had?
Thanks.
