I live on an island. I look closely at wood. I make musical instruments. Lately I have been finding oldgrowth CVG yellow cedar, western red cedar, sitka spruce, and figured bigleaf maple( quilted and flamed) driftwood on the beach. I'm thinking about making a mandolin from some of this wood. Anyone here have experience using driftwood?

Bruce (Spruce) will probably show up in this thread eventually. He also lives on an island, and I'm pretty sure he has harvested spruce and/or cedar from the beach.

Hi Blaine....
Yeah, I've cut up quite a few driftwood logs....
Spruce, yellow cedar, WR Cedar, Doug Fir, Port Orford Cedar, etc. etc....
I love cutting up driftwood, mainly 'cause it's so damn fun hanging on the beach and cutting up wood....
And it's usually really easy to see if the log is a straight-splitter, because the sun has usually checked the log so you can see the split....
Here's me about 25 years ago cutting up a nice Sitka log that's sitting on about 25,000 oysters....
