The info I find shows this piece and the others its grouped with composed well before the 20s. Which would make them Public Domain.

Most likely, photocopying a published edition of them is still an infringement (since the edition itself is also copywritten), but the composition is PD allowing someone to notate/edit it themselves and share it.

FWIW.

Okay, I need to find something out. I'm not trying to be a smart aleck but I see the term "copywritten" all over the place and I can't figure out where it comes from. Since the word for securing an author's rights to his work is "copyright" shouldn't the past participle be copyrighted? It isn't copywrite, after all, is it? If there is a new usage I am not aware of I'd like to find out about it.

I also think it should be "right" and not "write" but I haven no idea where the term started and in what context.

The actual word is probably just as confusing as all the laws surrounding it. ;)

There's a reason why there are companies who make money by merely researching if a song is public domain or not. It's a pain in the neck.

I tend to agree with item number 2 on this (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/copywritten).

A copywriter is a person who writes copy for publications. Many various constructs of "copywrite" are valid words but none of them means anything about rights.

A copywriter's copywritten material is considered to be copyrighted upon publication.
