View Full Version : Tuner slipping?

I put some new strings on my Weber Sweet Pea, and I'm having a problem I've never had before. The shortest E string goes .20 flat within seconds of tuning it. When I tune it, it seems to take an inordinate amount of turns to get it tight. I only got about two wraps on the post when I put the new string on-- could that be it? Is it possible that the high string tension is actually turning the tuner backwards? It's such a minute amount that I can't see it with the naked eye if it is. I suppose it's also possible that it's pulling the string back through the hole...

Did you change string gauges? This sounds like a classic "slot is too tight for the string " problem. If you put on strings slightly heavier in gauge that could be your problem.

No, I actually went to J62s, which have a 0.010 E string. I'm not totally sure what were on there, but I'm guessing the one I took off was a 0.011.

Sounds like the string is slipping on the post to me.

Could be the loop slipping at the tailpiece. Sometimes they are not wrapped tightly enough.

That could be... with a SP, it's impossible to tell, because the loop is inside the body. It seems to be holding now, so maybe it just needed to pull the slack out of something (like the loop). Fingers crossed, because I don't have a lot of strings down here, and I already cut it off close at the tuner post.

I would suspect the loop slipping. I just put on a new set of addario J67 & one E string started slipping at the loop long before I was on pitch. Good thing there was an extra E in the package. Abe

Also make sure your allways tuning UP to pitch. #If you tune too high take the string back down below correct pitch and bring it back up. #This takes the slop out of the gear and holds the tuning better. #Most tuners have sufficent tension so it will hold OK if you tune down to pitch (incorrectly) but if one tuner is a little sloppier, it will let go and slip down almost as soon as you pay it. #I played with a guitar player that ALLWAYS had this problem. Incidently, you wont see the tuner button rotate as the tuner slips if this is the problem because its the vertical part that the string wraps around that moves not the part with the button.
