I recently bought an A3 - 1914, it has the original knob on the end which is not suitable for a strap. I would like to put a strap on it to make it easier for me to play. What would be the best way to go about this? All the hardware and tail plate are origianl.
thank for any input.

Do you mean that it has the original tailpiece, and it didn't come with a strap button? Or do you mean that it has the original strap button, but it's broken or worn down so much that it won't hold a strap?

yes, I should have clarified. It is rounded down so that it wouldn't hold a strap. Doesn't really look like it was made for one.

Get a new end pin. #Usually the ebony end pins have to be fitted, but you may get lucky and find one that fits. Do not force a pin into the hole if it doesn't want to go in all the way. The pin should fit all the way to the raised shoulder, and hold firmly.

If the tappered shaft still fits the mandolin, I can make you a new ebony repro end pin with the appropriate MOP dot like the original. #I'll need the defective one to copy the shaft or accurate dimensions. #Send me an email if you like.

Your end pin should look like this original.

Thanks guys, I think, from seeing the pic, that the pin on mine is broken and then has been sanded smooth. Gail I'll take you up on your offer. I'll email you and we'll workout the details.
Thanks - db
