I know that the special edition that you're talking about is an F-style, but I purchased a Weber special edition oval hole from Dennis a while back and have been very pleased with the instrument. In fact, everybody that plays it just falls in love with its tone and playability. It's now on loan to a friend while I'm playing the heck out of my Fern, but I think I'll be keeping the oval hole for a long time.
BTW, Dennis and Brian are great to work with...good people that I hope to get the pleasure of meeting at some point.
Well, I don't have a special addition but just got a custom yellowstone with a ceder top from Dennis. It was my first weber and I was scepticle to say the least before it arrived. He had a hard time selling this perticular mandolin and gave me a sweeeet deal. Let me tell you this mandolin is great all around. Its fit and finish is perfect, great block inlay's, color and sound. People have been talking about the ceder and so far this mandolin has a very good (to my ears) sound and I think (hope) it'll get much better in time. I can tell it really opens up after i've been playing for a while, so thats very good news.
All this is leading to the point. The IMHO the weber product is great, sure they're not a 1 man shop but they're putting out some great instruments and I believe the special editions from the Mandolin store have nice woods such as the fern woods but with less ornamintation. But don't quote me ask Dennis, he'll shoot straight with you.
PS, I like my 'stone so much i'm thinking of an A model.
Good Luck
