I just ran into this (http://www.elderly.com/articles/dopyera/55u-3359.html) on the elderly website. I thought I'd seen the whole Dopyera collection before but somehow I missed this obviously mandolin inspired bass.

Boy, that is deeply ugly. The bridge looks like a door handle from an Amish barn.

I don't think that the bridge just looks like a barn handle, I think it was a barn handle.

You guys think it was easy for that blacksmith to make that bridge?
The only other painted-on f-holes I've seen were on a Gretsch guitar.

I don't think the F holes are painted on. I think I see light and shadows in one of the pictures.
Yup, they are cut.

I can get you bridges just like that from my Grandmother but you'll have to swap her something to use as handles on her circa 1950's knotty pine kitchen cabinets. Also, unlike the one in the photo, hers come with the original black textured mounting screws.

Is that for sale? I didn't see the price. It's got a face only a mother could love.

It's part of Rudy's personal collection, which is for sale as a whole.

I think Rudy made that specifically for Theodore Geisel.

With a name like Dopyera it has to be good. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
