I had the day off today and I went to our local Buffalo Bros sister store called Old Time Music and played the three Collings mandolins on the wall. First was a new MF satin finish and it had new strings and it sounded huge! Just a great mandolin. Played real nice also. Low action. Next I played gloss top MF and again it was great. Set up how I like it and I think it sounded way better than an average mandolin (including mine) in this price range. Then I pulled off the wall a very clean used MF5 in great condition and it just killed me in sound. Holy Smokes!!! My point to this is Collings mandolins are very consistant. Both in sound and the way they are made. I saw a man named Walt there who made me a new bridge for my old "23" A type 23 years ago in the old shop before Buffalo Bros. bought it and he told me he has owned several types of mandolins but now he playes a Collings MT-2. He told me that he thinks mandolins have been getting better over the years overall. I think guitars are way better also. I know you have the clasic guitars and mandolins from yesteryear but many of todays makers have found a way to just bring the sound out. I think we live in a great time for cool instruments. Just so you know, I don't own a Collings mandolin....yet! Nick

I agree, this is really great time to be into accoustic music!

Indeed; but nuthin' can ever compare to the musty vibe of a vintage axe.

If we're lucky enough we get to have a taste of the modern and the old in our collection. To me unless you got a 'really' good vintage mando they can't compete volume wise with the modern ones.

I no longer own any vintage mandos but I do have a '63 000-18 that I really love.
