I've been playing on an F style with medium gauge strings. Right now, I'm playing with a Red Bear Tortis medium B style pick. I find that the Tortis tends to be very rigid (which I like) and actually more rigid than the Wegen 1.4mm or Pro Plec 1.4mm picks that I've also used.

Are these pics to rigid to play on a mandolin with light gauge strings?

I use my Tortis C heavy on everything. I also use the Wegen TF 140.

On my bowlbacks, which all have the lightest strings I can get, the Tortis does an amazing job.

Seems to me that pick shape is easily as important as pick material. I find the old Dawg roundish picks just the thing for an F5, but I need pointier stuff for bowlbacks; even a Fender guitar pick is better.

I bought a few Wegens from the classifieds a year ago - no idea of the model - works great on a Calace bowlback. (I think it's got a "speed bevel". I like beveled picks on my F4 as well).

Oh man, I just looked at my Red Bear pick and it's a heavy, not a medium. What a dope I am. Thinking it was a medium, I ordered a Med in the classic style. I think I just had a senior moment, but i'd like to try a medium so i guess i made a good mistake. My new to me L&H style B is arriving in a few days and the calace strings are already here waiting

Wow, lucky you! I've been lusting over those for years and still haven't seen one up close and in person. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
