Obviously jazz can be played on any mando and the F5 has ruled many a swinging roost.
But I often notice two-points referenced as "good for jazz" or see them being held by jazz players.
Is it because they look jazzy? Or is it that they offer something special musically? Or somebody started a rumor?
I've never been able to lay hands on a high-quality two-point.

Maybe the makers of mandolins that produce "jazz tones" don't care if their work looks just like Bill Monroe's axe?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I would guess that Jethro Burns' 1959 Gibson A-5 might have inspired that notion.

Personally, I think 2 point mandolins are some of the sexiest creations. If you look at the one on Mandolin Central (Randy Wood A5, i think), wow is all I can say. I just love them. I realize this does not address your question at all but I just needed to get that off my chest.

Not that long ago I didn't care for the appearance of two-point mandolins at all. #Then I had a chance to trade one of my mandolins for a Randy-Wood two point...I knew that I didn't like two-points, but I knew the mandolin would have great tone. #But...the second I opened up the Wood's case for the first time, I fell in love with this cool little two-point (much better looking in real-life/3D than in photos, to my eye anyway). #
Yeah, I know this doesn't address the original question. #I would agree with Byrdmando above--SEXY (and I didn't even like the photo on Mando Central that Byrdmando mentioned...I was wrong). #Jazzy, yup. #I doubt the shape has anything to do with the tone. The best thing about my Randy Wood two-point is that you can so easily put "personality" into it's tone--very responsive to anything that you want to throw at it (now that's jazzy).

Never really thought of a 2 point as a jazz axe, But I do love them especially a asymmetrical design like the Lyon & Healy. I have a template drawn in auto cad and I'm getting ready to build me one.

Actually vibrational modes found in the helholtz air cavity between bass and treble points (assuming a perfect resonance curve and an idealized di-hydrogenated air mixture) and the centerline of the body mass index flumbuctuate rhythmically, "oscillate", in such a manner as to replicate the brownian motion of a Cadmium ion, which when reverse-synthesized with the color green produce "blue", a "jazz tone". #That's how it started at least... #Of course, symmetrical vs. asymmetrical brings in further, rather complicated mathematical and theoretical considerations...:p http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Awesome. Of course! That totally explains it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I think the assymetrical two point shape is one of the most elegant designs. Its on my list.

That may be like asking if a ball peen hammer or claw are more appropriate for drving a nail to hang a picture on...
The L&H Style A is my current favorite shape. I've got one inspired by that shape in the works with Brian Dean. My dream mando... I imagine I'll be playing much more non-jazz than jazz on it.
