I have been learning Old Dangerfield off of the Tone Poet cd.
I think it is in the key of a on that cd. What key did Monroe or what is the key that fiddle players use.

The Monroe instrumental song book I have also shows it in the key of A, though I'm not sure how exact this is. There's a youtube video of him playing it.

I've been meaning to put a video of it up on my YouTube site. It's been a hard one to play, for me. My hands don't seem naturally inclined to play a strong , driving melody in the key of A, but in the C chord position. I play Thile's version fromm "Stealing Second." It's the first break he takes, which is pretty similar to Monroe's.

Once I get it clean enough and up to a respectable speed, I'll post it.

Many of the "Old" Monroe tunes were in A modal. Some of them:

Old Dangerfield
Old Ebeneezer Scrooge
Old Stagecoach
My Father's Footsteps
Land of Lincoln
Jerusalem Ridge
there's a bunch more too

Though Monroe never played it "Dust in Lane" ala Compton's YouTube is along the same lines.

All greasy cool bluesy tunes! All similar yet all different.

An exception would be "The Old Mountaineer" which was in G.

Todd's book is faithful to the original recordings he lists in the discography in the back of the book. BUT written music can only reveal so much when it comes to this stuff. You really gotta listen to it over and over to get it in your head. The TAB is a guideline only.

The TEF versions are pretty good ones. I think I learned it from them.

good stuff, Mr. Reilly!

I've got a Compton/Long bootleg where Mike introduces the song and says it's named after one of Monroe's dogs. You ever hear anything about that?

Here are the chords per the I've got for it(but play your solo out of the C position in the A & B parts)

A A A E/A
A A A E/A

A D A E
A D A E/A

A A E E
D D A A
G D A A
D E A A

I don't know about the tune being named after his dog. I think he had mules named Minnie Pearl and Bill Monroe, tho.

It was named after a place... Daingerfield, TX I think? Note the correct spelling with the "i".

Here's a link to the recording I referenced above. I too had heard it was named after a Texas town, through Evan and the Rosenberg book. Anyway, here it is, maybe he named the song and dog after the town? who knows http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Mike says it was about one of his dogs in that recording. I gotta get my right hand working better on that tune.

The GOlden West is another cool modal tune. He wrote so many A modal tunes I'm starting to get them confused.
