We have a 1920 H4 with arrow head tuners...with a later pickguard screwed into the side and an adjustable bridge.
The person selling says that all is original since his father owned the instrument....which could be "true" since many instruments were sent back to the factory.
So those that know more than I do ....what's the story

Sure looks like a mandolin guard to me. Looks like a nice piece.

I have '22 only slightly newer so I noticed the mismatched parts right away but those small details wouldn't keep me from buying that one. The tuners are close enough in age and a proper pickguard could be made. The F5 pickguard really looks tiny on there. If it's a vintage 20s pickguard it alone would be worth something. The adjustable bridge is probably an improvement over the original as well. These are really great sounding instruments. I would be more concerned about cracks or major repairs.
The guard is not original and the tuners are very likely replacements too based on the SN, but again it's close enough it could have been drilled & set up that way originally.
I don't reckon they sold enough H4s to keep steady stock in those days, so not too out of the question to see the '23 tuners on a '20

guard in not original...it is from the 50's and is an F5 guard..there are marks on the back from the original pg clamp
No difference in drilling for the 1920 or 23 tuners. My bet is original tuners, just one of those holdovers. especially being a low volume instrument. Remember all indications are that they were not strung up and set ready to go if there was no place to go
