View Full Version : copper on bronze strings
niles h suggested lugnut covers for slides. i was in the plumbing supply area of a hardware store, and saw some copper tube caps that fit my fingers perfectly. they are somall enough to still use for fretting, lite and comfortable on my fingers. i use flattop strings, and its not worth hurting them. what do you think of using these as slides?
thanks for the input.

I dont man. I've been obsessed with slide guitar since I heard Johnny Winter around puberty. With that said, I prefer glass on some guitars, steel, pvc or ceramic on others. I've never used brass (too heavy) or copper (too light?) but for some reason I dont think I would like it. The standard dunlop steel sounds great to me and doesnt seem to have any effect on the strings...

Slide mandolin?- Check out The Waterboys Album "Fishermans Blues" from 1988.
Anthony Thistlethwaite credited withslide mandolin on the track When ye go away.
Seminal 'Raggle Taggle' album. I was part of that Brit\Irish scene in the early 90's-great days.

For the past eight years or so, slide mandolin has featured in almost every Richard Thompson Band show as the party piece of the band's multi-instrumentalist Pete Zorn (formerly with UK bluegrass band Arizona Smoke Review). #He plays a very thrashy mandolin solo on "Shoot Out The Lights", using a tin whistle as the slide which he then flings into the crowd with the last note.
I have to say, though, that the musical value of the solo is somewhat questionable, particularly as it takes the place where there should be a smoking Thompson guitar solo.
