Any recommend listening with him on mandolin (acoustic without drums).

Just saw him play with Del McCoury band "Rawhide" on the DVD The Legend Lives On, A Tribute To Bill Monroe, and man was he great.

I need to hear more Marty....

Youtube has some old clips of the NV Grass. Try to find his RidgeRunner record called Marty!, maybe RRR-0002. He did something called BusyBee Cafe years ago, has some mandolin on it. The ca. 1974-78 NV Grass put out some records, Marty is on mandolin.

He is great.

If you just want to pick something up at Borders (or B&N, etc), look for his recent "Live at the Ryman" where he plays mando with his band the Fabulous Superlatives. Marty flat out burns it, and does a smoking solo "John Hery" on there. Awesome picker and singer.

I picked up a copy of Compadres last year, it's a pretty good compilation of his duets over the years. #I LOVE the one he does with Del (Travel, Travel On). #There's also a version of Raw Hide from when he was like, 15 years old. #Don't listen to that unless you want to be depressed . . .

A Gospel Bluegrass Homecoming Volume One and Two; well worth the money! Lawson, Stuart, Compton, Skaggs, McCoury, some great picking. There is some, IMO, awful gospel stuff on there, but there is some phenomenal Bluegrass on there too. NFI!

On Merle Haggard's "Bluegrass Sessions" CD, Marty does some pretty good mandolin picking. I think he plays mandolin on every track.

Back in the Pleistocene Era, I saw teenage Marty S playing mandolin with Lester Flatt. #What stuck with me, oddly, is the way he moved his mouth while playing breaks, as if he were "speaking" the notes as well as picking them. #That was a pretty hot version of the Nashville Grass, by the way, with Kenny Ingram on banjo, Benny Martin on fiddle, Curly Sechler on guitar and harmony vocals, Charlie Nixon on Dobro, and Pete Corum on bass. #Flatt was obviously on his last legs, but sang well and MC'ed well.

They shared the bill with Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, and Stuart and Donnie Eldreth of Del's band did some fine double mandolin pieces. #Does anyone know if Eldreth's still playing?

Donny Eldreth is still living in PA, however I believe he has had some health issues recently. #His son Donny Eldreth Jr. is a great mandolin player currently playing with Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass.

Interesting that on the Nashville Grass's youtube video of "Cripple Creek", Marty appears to be playing Randy Wood #3. This was Bill Monroe's mandolin, and he lent it to Marty while he played with the NG.

Marty does some great mando stuff on Doc Watson's (with Merle, recorded when Merle was young and just learning banjo) "Home Sweet Home" cd. Sam on fiddle, too.

This is a good record, by the way.

I was recently in Nashville and took in a Grand Ole Opry show at the historic Ryman Auditorium downtown. Marty Stuart and Ronnie McCoury did a mando duet of Bluegrass Breakdown. If anyone ever has questions about Marty's ability to pick the mandolin, forget about it! WOW! The amazing thing, he introduced Ronnie as his favorite mandolin picker. Quite a tribute to two great mandolin players. It was interesting to hear the difference in the two Loars, and I noticed, despite the hard fast picking of the tune, Marty laid the instrument down with great care. I'm glad we decided to go to the Opry instead of the Nashville Predators hockey game, or taking in (and impossible to get) Vandy basketball game. Dan
