You are correct, although technically, I think the West Coast of the U.S. would also be on the Pacific Rim if you were to ask a geologist. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

a reference to mandolins made in Japan, Korea and China.
A reference to mandolins in the pacific rim that are inferior to U.S made mandolins.

Exactly, you never refer to the MK that is a Gibson-killer as a Pac-Rim mandolin. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

To me, Pac-Rim only means where the instrument was produced, with no inference as to quality. Too many folks make an immediate association with poor quality and that has proven to be unrue in many cases. I don't believe it should be used as a derogatory term, but rather just another location of builders.

I think Steve Gilchrist is in Sydney, so he's Pacific rim too. I'm sure he'll be able to cope with it! :-) I'm Southern Ocean rim. It's just we South Aussies... some chilly water... and a heap of penguins and whales.

Could a seafaring instrument from halfway across the world possibly have any interesting tales to tell?
