hey guys/ladies

I'm new to the computer and bluegrass. My family plays bluegrass and listens to it all the time and I.... well I have played football for about 12 years of my life and never really listened to music. But I went to a family outing with everyoneand they were listing to bluegrass (MR. Bill Monroe)and I heard the mandolin for the first time I mean really listened. After that I went and bought one and now I am hooked. My main question is what should I listen to and what vidoes or other things should I get?

Sorry about the long post but I wanted you to know were I am commingfrom.

I'd consult with the musicians in your family first, and take their advice on what to order. A beginner can spend a lot of time and money on all the instructional videos and CDs available these days. Good luck. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I would order Roland Whites book http://www.rolandwhite.com/index.shtml for a start.

Depending on what kind of music you like most, I would suggest you'd listen to the following :
Bill Monroe, Del McCoury, Ricky Skaggs, Seldom Scene, New Grass Revival, Old & in the Way, David Grisman Quintet, Nickel Creek, Mountain Heart, Alison Krauss, Rhonda Vincent, Tim O'Brien, Lonesome River Band, Nashville Bluegrass Band, Blue Highway, Quicksilver, Hot Rize, et, etc, ... # # #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Thanks for the help. There are just so many to chose from. I have tried and they say to listen to any of them but I want one that have alot of mandolin in it. I also like all types of music as long there is a mandolin in it.

Download all the mp3's on this site. Some you'll like and some you won't, but they'll all have mandolin in 'em. Burn yourself a cd with the ones you like.

I just got one of John Reischmann's CDs and find it to be inspiring. That man plays clean.

Chris Thiele has a solo out called "All who wander are not lost" it's a good one, too.

David Grisman's Tone Poems, all 3, are really nice, too. Now these aren't all bluegrass, but it's good mandolin, guitar, and resophonic stuff.

Good luck, have tons of fun.

Without a doubt: get the Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza, on Grisman's Acoustic Disc (http://www.dawgnet.com) label. It's the best resource I know where you can hear all the major players and styles represented!

Look for festivals in your area and see the top players first hand!

Thank you to all who replied. I went and bought mandolin extravaganza, the chris thile video, a seldom scene cd(act4)
and Bill Monroe greatest hits. If anyone else has any input for a cd with a good chop so I can get the sound down that will help also.
