I'll try my hand at fitting a bridge tonight. Wish me luck.

There is something even better than luck if you are having trouble getting the fit you want. Frank Ford's sharp jackknife trick where you "cup" the bridge base by minutely scraping it's center so that when you are sanding it down, you are really only removing the outer edges and not having to hog out a lot of material. Using this technique you can achieve an almost vacuum-like fit, which your mandolin (and your ears) will appreciate.

Why does this take luck? Minor planing, cutting with sharp tools is needed... I'm confused, but I'll wish you luck nonetheless. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Oh thanks! It took me two attempts to get the string spacing right. I have the good fret/nut files from Stewmac. The base of the bridge from Randy was so good it really didn't need any fitting. All in all it turned out OK. The "The Loar" is still a nice instrument, but I know there is going to be something better for me in the future with the new "Poe".
