In the new issue of The Fretboard Journal, there is a good article on Vince Gill, and a couple nice shots of his beautiful Loar. Wow - it looks really clean.

Anyone know the serial number? Any pics in the archive?

PS - how's this for a birthday present? His wife Amy Grant for his 50th gave him a 1930 Martin OM-45!

Hmm... The one with John Scofield on the cover or another issue?

I didn't see those pictures in the current one with Scofield.

Nope, the Scofield issue was the last one. The new one - arrived yesterday at my house - has Richard Thompson on the cover. Lots of great stuff (as always), including a look at luthier Kim Walker focusing on his archtops.

The Gill Loar looks stunning to me.

'ol Vince can pick that thing also. I believe if he ever got tired of playing country, he could have an outstanding Bluegrass sound, that would be unique.

I've heard he's a scratch golfer too, and could make it on the PGA tour. #Might even be more money in that than in Bluegrass! # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I always appreciated Vince's assessment of his own bluegrass flat picking;
"I'm not like alot of those country players who think they can play bluegrass guitar, I can hang...."
Looking forward to my FBJ in the mail...

If Mr. Russell suddenly quits posting we can assume Chuck Norris got wind of his post. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Oh yes, give a listen to that old 70's Bill Perry Bluegrass Jam thing, Bobby Clark, Flux, Skaggs on fiddle, and Vince on flat top. He could 'hang' quite well.

She also gave him 2 of Bill Monroe's mandolins for Christmas. What a wife and good looking to boot.

Vince Gill also played in a one album Bluegrass band called "Here Today" with David Grisman, Herb Pedersen and other heavy hitters.

Funny Story about Vince and Golf(caution: no mandolin content): I'm my high school years I worked on the grounds crew at the local golf course where Vince plays regularly. One day as I was working on repairing a bunker I noticed someone playing through on foot which was unusual at this club. I respectfully stopped working and as he came closer and I realized it was Mr. Gill. When he was about where I was on the fairway I said "Good afternoon Mr. Gill" He looked over at me and just said "I hate this !@*$ game". I chuckled and as he moved on I thought what a great real reaction that was. I have liked him ever since. I like him even more now that I know he plays mandolin http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Absolutely one of my favorite bluegrass albums. Dawg is in fine bluegrass form though vocally I would have to say he can't quite "hang" with Vince. Not a lot of fancy picking from Vince (on guitar) as I recall but a very, very solid piece of work. I bought the vinyl back then but just recently picked up the CD. Well worth it. Worth it just for their version of "Lonesome River" in my opinion.

ALSO PLAYS ON DAN CRARY'S VINYL DISC " LADY'S FANCY" ROUNDER 0099 / 1977. SAM BUSH IS ALSO ON THIS RECORDING. I CONSIDER IT ONE OF THE MUST INFLUENTIAL ALBUMS I OWN. NEVER GET TIRED OF LISTENING TO IT.

I remember how good the vocals were when Vince sang lead in the bluegrass/newgrass band Sundance at Winfield back in the mid 70s.
Later that decade, I heard him sing and play in a late version of Pure Prairie League with mostly non-original personnel. He had them dancing on the chairs as he covered "Amie."

I wonder if his new wife likes that song?

Yes to Here Today, great record. You're right, Vince lays it low and lonely, but gets in one blistering lick to end 'My Walking Shoes'. I always listen for that lick.

Vince Gill plays some fine mandolin on the two Jeff White cd's.

And he was also a charter member of Boone Creek, but was terminated after a week or two. He landed on his feet, though, as Pure Prairie League was next.

On top of everything already mentioned, he's a solid banjo player too - first I ever heard of him was a fiddle-banjo duet with Byron Berline on Byron's tune "Birmingham Fling" on a live album from Telluride called "The Festival Tapes", and he easily held his own.

He's been known to pop in at the Double Stop Fiddle Shop in Guthrie, OK and jam with Byron. He made a guest appearance there a few months back. Needless to say, the crowd usually enjoys that!!

If only he could sing he could have a great career in music.

Sundance released an LP in the early 80s, "Live at McCabe". it's Vince playing mandolin, and his picking is outstanding on that. I don't think it's been reissued on CD, I should dig it out.

He's quite the collector isn't he! I would have liked to have seen more pictures of the loar. Even though the fretboard journal is a great "guitar" magazine it seems it could improve on the "mandolin" content as our little instrument falls into the "fretboard" catagory...Send emails..."We want more Mandolin Content"! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The first time I came across the name Vince Gill was on a 1976 album of instrumentals by banjoist Eddie Shelton. It features Bobby Clark on mandolin and Vince on dobro.
