There is an old Stanley #7 for sale at shopgoodwill.com (http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewItem.asp?ItemID=3418990) right now that looks to be in really good shape. It is hard to tell by the photos, but with the sticker on the handle looking that good I doubt the plane was used much and it appears to have minimal rust. I put a lowball bid in, but I already have a #7 that is in pretty good shape so I thought I would point this out to others that might have an interest.

I guess I should have put that it was a Stanley plane in the title since Stanley is also the name of a mandolin builder. Oh well.

Amazing enough, it got me too this morning. I was looking for a Stanley Mandolin (#7).

Thanks Jamie. I know not many people will be interested in an old plane, but threads about planes come up from time to time and old Stanleys like this one are frequently suggested for use in jointing tops/backs.

My step dad picked up one of these in near perfect shape for $15 at a local flea market. Best Christmas present I've had in a long time. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

That actually looks like a pretty sweet old plane. The pics are horrible but it appears to be in decent shape other than some minor surface rust that should clean up. It's probably from the late '20s, which is my favorite era of Stanley bench planes.

One concern, if anyone is considering buying it, is that I can't see the lateral adjustment lever that should be there. It may be pushed all the way to the top of the picture (right side of the blade) and hiding behind the blade in the full view. It looks like it may be visible in the slot. You could use the plane without it, but if I were bidding on it I would bid low because I can't see that and the pics are so fuzzy I can't really tell how bad the surface rust is.

With some cleaning and setup it would probably be a good plate jointing plane if it doesn't get bid up to high.

Paul,
I keep an eye out for planes at shopgoodwill. A year or two ago you could pick up some bargains. Now I frequently see things go for more than they would on ebay. I got a #2 Stanley and a Miller Falls #9 (the size of a Stanley #4) together in excellent shape for about $20 including shipping. I would like to have kept both, but with the #2's selling for $200-300 I needed the money more than the plane and I sold it on ebay.

Killer deal on the #2... I paid about $50 for mine but, like you said, they're selling for more than that. My problem is I'm a tool junkie and I won't likely part with it even though it's not a very usable size.

Bill,

You are one lucky dog! Nice find on the #2. I have been low balling jointers for a while (not constantly, but every now and then) and haven't hit the jackpot yet. I have a decent MII jack and I may just take it to a machine shop to make it a very good jack and use it for joining. I use it now, but it requires more patience and/or extremely good technique to get a perfect edge and I have used other jacks that prep a board with much less effort (and yes, I know how to hone the blade).

My #6 and #7 both could benefit from new blades. The original blades have gotten a bit short. I would purchase Hock's for them, but at the moment money is a bit tight and I prefer my #5 1/2 for jointing mandolin length wood.

Even with Jamie's change, I still looked expecting a mando. And no, I am not very observant.
