Does anyone have The Shogun's Farewell on MP3 or CD.
Its my favorite tune and I'd like to learn it on Mandolin.

BTW I've played the Guitar since 1963, and learning the Banjo since 2004. Now I'm working on learning the Mandolin. I have to say that so far it seems the easiest of the 3 for me to get right.

I'm retired(forced by health) and have alot of time to devote to this. I also have just bought a Fiddle, but the dog runs crazy when I take it out of the case. So I dont try it much.

I'm glad to have found this source of musical knowledge and look forward to getting to know my Madolin better.

It's actually Ashokan Farewell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx6dxrhqPZY)

Here (http://www.jayandmolly.com/ashokanfarewell.shtml) is the definitive source for information.

I DUNNO...
I like the image of Tom Cruise, in 'The Last Samurai' playing a little bit of old-time mandolin for the oriental warriors.

Ashokan Farewell has several tabs on Mandozine here. (http://www.mandozine.com/music/search_results.php?searchfor=farewell&tuneselectby=C&mandolevel=&category=&songkey=&artist=&transcriber=&sortby=T&sortorder=A&submit=) The TablEdit software is free there as well.

Edit: There is a beginner and an intermediate level version there. I love this song too and it sounds great on solo mandolin. Have fun.

Re-visiting the OP...
The MP3 can be bought from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&tag=mozilla-20&index=blended&link%5Fcode=qs&field-keywords=ashokan%20farewell&sourceid=Mozilla-search) and it is on the Civil War Soundtrack. You can probably get it from I-Tunes store or any other Mp3 site as well.

One last thing... Alan, welcome to the Mandolin Café.

I like Sycamore's title! Maybe if we ask Mr. Ungar nicely he'll change it. ( That'd sure mess with Ken Burns, huh? )

Vocabulary Word of the Day: Mondegreen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondegreen)

Half the people in the world seem to think that it already is the title. It's not an unusual mistake actually.

I stand corrected on the title. I'd only heard it spoken on the radio and made the error. And to think I've been calling it the S word for a long time.
Thanks for all the links to the tune.

Keep on pickin, but not on me http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Sycamore,
I certainly didn't mean it as a put down. But you sure gave me a good chuckle, so I thank you for that. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Darling Wife has figured out the Mid-mo is really easy to pick up on a whim during her work day. She's been plucking her way through Ashokan Farewell over the past few days, and is doing great. After a year on The Dark Side (picking b@nj0) she's beginning to see the light.

They have slain the Earl of Murray, and Lady Mondegreen...

As someone who does historical re-enactments, including a bunch of Civil War events, it's amused me a bit how Ashokan Farewell has leapt back over a century to become a "Civil War tune," based solely on the Ken Burns PBS series. #While I love the tune, and am glad that Jay Ungar is no doubt enjoying the royalties from his wonderful composition, part of me wishes that Burns had selected an equally haunting and nostalgic period melody to be his theme ––#Weeping Sad and Lonely, The Vacant Chair, Aura Lea, or Faded Coat of Blue, for example.

People do assume it's an old tune. I know I did when I saw the series. We had a guy in our band that could recite the entire letter to Sarah from memory. The only problem was that I generally cracked up at some point and couldn't play it any more. It did sound great.

My daughter played Ashokan Farewell (fiddle) at my brother's memorial service last year. A woman came up to me after and complimented my daughter's playing and mentioned that she knew the piece from the Civil War series. I told her that we live across the (Hudson) river from Ashokan and that the composer Jay Ungar visits my daughter's fiddle group a couple of times a year. She became pretty upset when she found out that it was a "modern" tune. She like so many thought it was from the Civil War period. She walked away muttering to herself.
