I just got one of those big, horizontal filing cabinets (free from work - woohoo!), and I'm determined to organize my growing collection of sheet music. My first thought was to group by genre, but I have a handful of books that span genres.

Do you have a method for storing your sheet music? If so, let's hear about it.

Hanging file folders. #I have 3 0f the plastic file boxes like milk totes. with lots of photocopys in folders. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
But then, for organizing, my main category is Misc. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Jeff - probably the easiest way to file such an incestuous subject as sheet music ... is to do it by your own interests. I'd take a penciled inventory of your material first and start noting where you're focused. If you have fifteen books of Classical or bluegrass, several hundred sheets of big band and 2 blues collections, well that would kind of indicate where your interests are and how to sort the stuff out. The limited collections, could all fit in one hanging file. The larger collections in several hangers - sorted alphabetically, either by title or author. This is for your use and storage so whatever makes sense to you - do it.

Just remember - put it back where you found it or where it belongs, and figure out a word processing format which will print out lables for the thumb tags ... It makes the filing look great and you feel responsible for putting things back where they belong.
