I just received a Collings MT I bought off the classfieds. The seller took off the strings when he shipped it. Now I have to decide which way the bridge goes back on, as it's not symmetrical.

I think I can tell by the size of the grooves for the strings. However, before I string it back up I'd like some confirmation.

One side of the bridge saddle has much more carved out of it than the other. I think this side goes towards the tailpiece. Can someone confirm this? This would also put the treble side of the saddle lower than the bass (due to the current wheel positions). Is this normal?

Thanks,

the treble side is sloped on the talepes side and flat on the
bridge side

Thanks. That matches up with how I thought it should go. Good way to describe it, too. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Why take off the strings while shipping?

I've run into that too. Strings were completely slack, bridge tucked in the little compartment.

I've shipped with the bridge off once or twice. This was an overreaction to a situation where I received a nice mandolin with gouges and scratches all over the top from a tailpiece cover that had come loose, and apparently spent the trip clogging with the bridge, which had tipped over at full tension, then was set free to make a mess. Now I just lower string tension a bit, and pad around the bridge to make sure it can't tip over or move. Frank
