Cool!
You've been asking lots of good questions lately so I can tell you've been bitten BAD by the MAS bug! I haven't played a Poe but the reviews here are stellar - guess we'll all be waiting to see the pics and hear your review. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Glad to hear that Mr. Loar. Welcome to the club. Sounds like a nice BG axe. Any other details on the design?

Andy talked me out of the oval sound hole because I play mostly Bluegrass and I'm a chopper. It's going to be a Deluxe model F5.

What made you decide to go with Andy Poe?
I'm expecting to face a similar decision in a couple of years and the choices just keep expanding. My top three is closer to a top ten now. Seriously, when a person gets to that stage, how do you narrow it down? What is the criteria when it gets right down to it. How do you make that final decision?

I have read a lot about all the mandolin luthiers on the internet. Andy Poe's attitude and devotion seemed to stand out to me, especially reading one of his interviews. He sounded honest (I've had trouble with one particular luthier in the past, but I degress.) and confident. He answered my email inquiry promptly and courteously. He's a genuine nice person. A lot of the other luthiers had web sites that were undeveloped or didn't work right. Andy's web site had plenty of pictures of his mandolins to look at. The Mandolin Cafe had a lot of information on him and his work.
I'm a Gibson type of guy, and the majority of my collection is Gibson guitars and basses. Gibson mandolins might be the ones to have, but they are too expensive.
I loved Hannigan's Gilchrist when I played it, but I don't have $40,000.
Andy's price range coincided with my budget and he wanted the least amount to get started on mine.
Lastly, I like the name.
Did he give you an estimate on delivery time?
Congratulations, I'm also waiting.........and waiting...................and...well. I'm on tap for #31 I think, should be done sometime this fall...Nov? maybe.
When I placed the order with Andy, I originally wanted a marbled back they really look stunning. But he asked a couple questions about playing style and my preference and really talked me out of what "looks pretty" to me. He recommeded woods (not sure what kind) that would be good for bluegrass. He really has a good grasp of different woods tonality.
I'm glad to hear so many people still love their Poe's I've posted something a while back asking how they're aging and breaking in. I recieved a few responses all glowing but thought there should have been more, but he's only made 17 instruments as of this post so, i'm a knucklehead.
This should be a KILLER instrument.

Don't forget the 23 Driftwood models Andy built prior to the name change...

First post here, but I've lurked for ages. I had to chime-in when I saw the Poe reference.
I'm in line for something like #28, yet another Deluxe F5 from Andy. My deposit went in sometime last July after drooling over several just completed models that were posted here.
Seven months into an agonizing wait. I'm anticipating a start date somewhere around April. Yee ha!

Congrats Stan and welcome to the Poe club. It won't be long now. I especially enjoyed the last two months of the building process as Andy sent a lot of photos and the progress really accelerated. It was exciting to see the mandolin come to life. Enjoy the ride. Interesting avatar BTW.

Mr. Loar, that is awesome! You won't be disappointed and you will have a one of a kind instrument when he is finished. Andy has great artisitic ability, if you can, get him to design you a one of a kind head stock inlay. He does an amazing job at inlay. My Avatar is the design he created for mine. Now the hardest part, the WAIT!! but on the bright side it gives you time to come up with the funds! Looking forward to the in progress pictures. Anyone out there who might be interested in a POE and lives somewhat close to southern Ohio. I would be glad to share #5 and let you try her out. Just drop me a message.

I forgot to add a "congrats" to Mr. Loar in my prior post. Misery love company I suppose.
A word of advise to anyone contemplating getting on a builders list: don't tell anyone! I made the mistake of telling friends and family that I was on the waiting list for a custom mandolin. It wasn't 3-months later when I started to get the question "hey where's that new mandolin?"
So unless you can stand hear questions like this every week or so for a year or two - just don't tell anyone - at least not until you've got pictures. Better yet, wait until you've got a tracking number.

Good point, it's hard enough having to wait for something, yet even worse people reminding you that you are waiting. Leave us waiters alone!!!
