Had the pleasure of seeing Tim play at Camden's Green Note cafe last night in a tiny room which probably holds 75. It was great to see such an amazing player close up & in an intimate setting. Tim played mando, guitar, fiddle and a little banjo & even dedicated Black & White Rag to 'the mandolin cafe members in the audience'.
Excellent stuff.

Oh no! How come I didn't know about that?!
DRAT! Missed him.
One of my favourite mando players too. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
Good show indeed, and nice to meet you Matt. I had mailed Tim earlier to say we'd have a Cafe Cadre on hand. At the break he asked how many we had and I said "All four of us" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
One of my favorite things he did was a bluegrass number where he sang whilst playing harmonies on the fiddle.
Tim is one of the few who can decisively pull off a solo gig. And good to hear the Cafe mentioned - We Are The World!

That must have been a real treat. I love it when he sings along with the fiddle. Bruce Molsky can do that too. Not an easy feat to pull off.
One of my favorite things he did was a bluegrass number where he sang whilst playing harmonies on the fiddle.
Maybe that was "Working on a Building"? He does a great version of that with solo fiddle.
That's the one. He did some other songs along with the fiddle too, but that was the one that had the jaws dropping in the room http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Tim's the whole package, in my opinion: brilliant songwriter, great voice, multi-instrumentalist and man, the wonderful soulful tone he pulls from that Nugget! And now, he's getting more and more into production, finishing up the new CD for the Infamous Stringdusters as well as the CD he produced for the Duhks last year.

Yes indeed!
I first heard him do that in a fiddle workshop he and Sam Bush were giving in Nacodoches, Texas in 1986. #He recorded it with Hot Rize on the "Traditional Ties" album, but it didn't have quite the same impact with the whole band playing and not being able to see his amazing ability.
I spoke with an exhausted Tim for a few minutes after the North Texas Irish Fest a couple of years ago. #Very nice guy.

I was at the gig and I must say it was one of the best I've been to. His voice impressed me most, powerful and effortless.

Saw him at the Station Inn a couple of months ago. He's the real deal. I'd have to say he's my favorite mando player, but the fact that he also plays guitar, fiddle, sings and writes so well makes me hate him. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Tim is playing in Minneapolis at the Cedar this Sunday night (2/10)....a triple bill with Chris Smither and Dave Alvin. Not sure if they are all on at one time or following each other. Also for folks in the cities, the 26th annual Battle of the Jugbands is at the Cabooze (just down the block) earlier in the day. It is a hoot.

There will likely be a recording of this show out in bootleg sometime. wonder if anyone recorded it? worth checking around. Tim allows taping and trading and there are some killer boots out there.

Looked to me like the guy doing the sound was recording it straight from the board.

If this is true then I'm even more p*ssed that I missed the gig. An attitude like that deserves plenty of support at live shows.
Respect to Mr O'B.

Amen to that.
I must have seen the solo fiddle/vocal working on a building thing done 6 times, but it still gets me.

I did ask the venue in advance if it was OK for me to tape the show & they said yes but, in the end, I wanted to just watch the show without worrying about batteries/memory cards/placing mics etc so I didn't. I'd be interested to hear a recording though if anyone else has one!
Tim's taping policy reads:
Taping Policy
Tim O'Brien/Howdy Skies Records
To whom it may concern,
I endorse audience taping at my shows, subject to some conditions. Those conditions are:
1. Taper agrees to send a CD or DAT copy to Tim O'Brien, PO Box 120238, Nashville TN 37212.
2. Taper recognizes that all commercial rights to the tape or cd belong exclusively to Tim O'Brien. In other words, under no circumstances may anyone, whether it's the taper or anyone else, sell tapes or cds to anyone else.
3. Taper must obtain prior permission from the promoter and venue as well to tape the show. (Some venues and promoters simply won't allow taping.)
4. Taper agrees to deal with promoters, venue managers, sound people, and their staff, as well as other audience members, in a low pressure, courteous manner. Make waves and you're out of there!
5. If the atrist on the show is billed any way other than "Tim O'Brien", "Tim O'Brien Band", or "Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott", taper must obtain prior permission from other artists listed on billing who are to be taped on the same show. In other words, you can tape me, but you can't tape Steve Earle when I'm his sideman or on a co-bill with him.
6. If taper trades tapes (heaven forbid!) (only joking), he must not edit out the part in my show where I say, "While you're listening to this home burned cd or tape, why not click on timobrien.net or howdyskies.com to see about purchasing some of my popular studio recordings?"
If taper aggrees to the above conditions, he can tape my shows from the audiuence or from a mixing board feed.

Tim's skill as a singer, song-writer and a multi-instrumentalist put him up there with the all-time greats in the acoustic world. John Hartford was another who could do it all with such majesty and grace. Chuck

There is a KA version of the fiddle harmony Working on a Building by Tim O'Brien on the Tribute to Bill Monroe DVD. #Lots of other great stuff too. #For example, Marty Stuart can really play!! #(I don't see many on the Cafe mention him much.) #Some nice Ricky Skaggs numbers (Get up John especially). #And Mike Compton (sans Gilchrist and overalls) with John Hartford. #Cool DVD to have from a while back.

I just bought it a couple of weeks ago at Borders. It is two volumes. Says copyright 2003 but looks older. Here it is at Amazon:Bill Monroe DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Lives-Tribute-Bill-Monroe/dp/B0000B1OCH).
