Folks, I need to learn some songs about frogs and dogs. Without getting too commercial, I plan to stand on a street corner and play them as a publicity stunt for the communications firm I work for (FrogDog Communications).

Now these need to be songs I can perform using my fairly solid rhythm guitar skills and limited female vocal range. So things like "Giving the Dog a Bone" are out. I won't use the mando for this project since I see that as more of a lead instrument.

Here are songs I've thought of so far (although a couple are probably aren't PC enough):

Frog Kissin'
Rabbit in a Log
Watermelon Wine
Mr. Bojangles
Flat Nose the Tree Climbing Dog (Austin Lounge Lizards)
The Dogs They Really Miss you (also ALL)
Me and You and a Dog Named Boo
West Texas Waltz (has one good dog verse)

Suggestions?

Oh yeah! Perfect! An old lady who lived across the street used to sing that to me when I was a kid.

Fluffy - Ween
Harpua - Phish

And there is a ballad about a dog named "Stains", but I don't think you want to perform that in public. You most likely wouldn't want to perform it privately either.

I'll sing a little song, and it ain't very long,
It's all about a murder;
Jim Thompson's dog, he et my frog,
And it don't go no furder.

Salty Dog Blues
Is that really about a four-legged canine? Good song though. I was once in a band led by a nice Christian couple who refused add that song to our set list for moral reasons...

Frogs and dogs? There's only one that comes to my mind... Dead Skunk in the middle of the road by Louden Wainright III:

Yeah you got yer dead cat and you got yer dead dog
On a moonlight night you got yer dead toad frog

Do you really want songs about dogs or do you want songs with the word "dog" in them? I'm pretty sure that the "Salty Dog" is not about dogs, just like the "Bulldog Blues" is not about bulldogs (a bulldog is a sawed-off shotgun or thereabouts. . . )

Bulldog Blues is a great song, however (better suited for the guitar, maybe).

Some good suggestions, here. Thanks.

I'm mainly looking for any connection to frogs and dogs, so I think Salty Dog would work. Plus, I already know it, so that's a bonus.

I've heart that Louden Wainright song, which always reminds me of the Lost Gonzo Band's "Dead Armadillo," which I, of course, cannot perform.

little joe has a nice verse about his dog:

keep tied mother my poor little dog
i know he will mourn for me too
just keep when old, as useless he grows
sleeping the whole summer through.

I love John Hiatt's "Dust Down A Country Road" ('there's an old dog starin' at the dust down a country road...')
Nice mandolin on that track, too.

The old Peter Paul and Mary song comes to mind ~

"I'm in love with a big blue frog,
A big blue frog loves me..."

Love the line about their future children:
"They'll be good lookers,
'cause they'll have my face,
great swimmers,
'casue they'll have his feet."

Not sure which album it's on.

Old Dog Blue! my favorite dog song

had a dog and his name was blue, don;t you know that blue was true, treed a possum in a hollow log, you know blue was a good old dog, oh blue your a good old hound, get that possum on the ground.

Dog and Gun - from the lost Volume 4 of Harry Smiths Anthology of American Folk Music

I got a bulldog (I got a bulldog, he cost $500, in my backyard babe my backyard. When he barks, it ring like thunder, in my back yard babe my backyard.)

Skillet lickers - gotta quit kickin' my dog around - riley puckett really nails this!

Rattler treed a possum (I think that's the name of the thing) - rattler treed a possum, rattler treed a possum, rattler treed a possum, way up the hemlock tree.
Raccoon and a possum, raccoon and a possum, raccoon and opposum, say beware that barking dog.)

Not to be confused with OLD RATTLER!

man, dog songs!

On the frog front, the anthology of american folk music has a song called Saut Crapaud, which translates from Acadian French to
"Jump Frog" it certainly is a great song.

Bullfrog Blues - might be a different version, on John Fahey's collection American Primitive volume 2. Have you ever woke up with those bullfrogs on your mind. The way I see it, this is about something that keeps you up at night being told to you by them noisy bullfrogs. metaphoric!

Take Feast Here Tonight and change it a bit.

There's a frog in a log and I aint got my dog
How will I get him? I know
I'll get me a fly and wave it by his eye
Yeah, that's how I'll get him I know.

I'll build me a fire and cook that old frog

Not easy bein' green! Of course. Why didn't I think of that? My last name is Green, and I've always regretted not having someone play that at my wedding.

OK, guys, thanks for all your suggestions. Given my time constraints on this project, I thought it best to stick with songs I'm fairly familiar with. Y'all reminded me of a couple of good ones. Here's my play list:

Frog Kissin'
Flatnose the Tree Climbing Dog
Mr. Bojangles
Move it on Over
Froggy Went A-Courtin'
Watermelon Wine
The Dogs, They Really Miss you

I couldn't find any chords to It Ain't Easy Bein' Green, and I decided I just couldn't pull off Salty Dog or Jeremiah was a Bullfrog.

Thanks for your help!

My Personal favorite is "There was an old lady"... It starts with..

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly, I don't know why she swallowed a fly.... perhaps she'll die....

followed by Spider, Bird, Cat, Dog, Horse (then She died of course)....

You'll have to be creative to put a frog in there, but it should work.

Regards

Marc

Looks like a good list that you've come up with so far. Let us know how it goes. Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Also, at least two of Dan Zane's songs (who plays a Gibson A4) feature frogs or dogs:
