Hi, I really love this song, from New Lost City Ramblers 58-62 and on Garcia/Grisman's Shady Grove. I know it's basically all banjo, and I have the banjo music. But I'm unsure how to adapt it to mandolin. Any suggestions about chord progression or melody? Or has anyone adapted this tune to mando?

Also, can someone provide some insight as to music-theoretically what is going on in the song?

Thanks a lot,
linguist

Another fine version is by Bruce Molsky, with cross-tuned fiddle; recording is Warring Cats. (http://www.brucemolsky.com/store/prod_warringcats.htm) #Might be nice to try cross-tuning the mandolin...?

Later: Want to hear a version played on the charango (by Lew Dite)? Might give you some suggestions; it's on YouTube here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gbjf2R2dVc)

If you can get ahold of it, the "In the Pines" CD by Todd Phillips et al has a really nice version, I believe with Mike Marshall on mandolin. Very spare, pretty, and almost hymn-like in its arrangement. Very different from the old-timey or folk-style arrangements I've heard; modulates from A to D.
