A first... A REALLY dead G string right out of the box. This happened to be the Gibson guitar p/b and to be quite honest, the rest of 'em aren't as bright ( ring ) as I'd like them. Kinda mellow right out of the box. As I said, these are guitar strings.
I've used Gibson mandolin strings w/out any problems so this is a little strange. I re inserted the string a few times thinking maybe it wasnt sitting right on the saddle or nut but no difference. For my mandolin and apparently my guitar as well, the D'Addarios work the best. Anyone else get dead ones right out of the box ?

Getting the guitar mixed up with the mandolin. It happened to be the low E string that was dead....

I've never strung a guitar... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
The only strings I've ever had pop while restringing were a couple of E-strings (for mandolin) from a D'Addario J74 pack. You could try and take them back to the store or write Gibson a letter or e-mail. They may send you a fresher set.

I bought some strings out of a 'clearance box' once for $1.50 for the set ... i think they were Fender Super Bulletts. They must have been very old and were dead when i put them on the guitar ! I'd have felt foolish returning them ... lesson learned.

When I got the replacement string from a luthier, he advised it wasnt that unusual to get a dead string ( especially from Gibson ) said it was probably the winding that was screwed up from the factory since the rest were semi-ok. He doesnt carry Gibson for that reason.
