I wandered upon this page and I think its pretty helpful! I was surprised by the tone of the Morgan Monroe's and gotta say that as much as I dislike the Breedloves look they sound sweet...

Is there any realy appreciable difference in the sound and playability between the A model and F model? It looks to me like the F model is super pricy but is the quality of sound that much better? Parden me but I'm an experienced guitar player and new to the mandolin thing. I bought a cheap A model to see what it's all about and really enjoy the mandolin. But the price difference is puzzeling. What's the word from experienced mandolin players.
Joe
Joe, all depends on the make. #You'll find that the more you pay the better playability and workmanship. #The scroll really makes the price jump. #Carved top and back make the price jump. #There's obviously more workmanship involved. #With the asian mandos you'll find that a lot of them aren't carved, but formed. #Good, bad? #I would say that whatever you find that floats your boat...
As far as sound, well, there's been some threads here and there and no general consensus has evolved between the sound of F vs. A, so that should tell you something. #However the general consensus between the asian mass produced and the large/small luthier built (Gibson-Weber-BRW, etc..) is that these(L/S LB) have much better sound and better playability. #Please Pac-rim owners, don't flame me for that, I'm only reporting what I've read here.
Like you, I come from a guitar background, pretty much strictly acoustic, and I've tried to play whatever mandolin I can find, just to answer those questions for myself. #I feel that the scroll looks pretty cool, but can't really tell the difference in sound or playability from a comparable A or F, but do notice appreciable differences in the quality of these issues between inexpensive-expensive. #You truly do get what you pay for. #You NEED to play some good ones and compare for yourself, that's 75% of the fun of this stuff.
