Im thinking of removing the last 5 frets on my mandolin is there anyway to mark the setting on the bridge other than masking tape? last time i used tape I had a hard time removeing the tape residue ! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
I've used a soft grease pencil with no problems.

put the tape on your pants and remove it a few times before you put the tape on your mandolin. this will make it much easier to remove and should not leave any residue. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

There's masking tape and then there's masking tape. I prefer the stuff marketed as painter's tape, but don't buy the cheaper brands because you never know what you'll get. Fold the end over (back on itself) so that it's easier to remove, and don't press it down hard, too much adhesion might not be a good thing as you discovered. I've used it to fix binding without trouble.
Peace, Mooh.
I use the tiny Post-It notes. They leave a little residue but it's easily cleaned off with spirits.

Being an ex-bodyshop painting guy and an automotive paint salesman I can say that you should always use 3M bodyshop grade masking tape or Shure Tape. It will NOT leave any residue because residue on a $3,000.00 paint job would make any painter quite ill.
BushJunior, Here here, that's what I use.
