Me and a couple of other guys have decided to start the process of putting together a mandolin ensemble/orchestra here in Southeast Virginia. Our first meeting will be Saturday, January 26th from 1-4pm at the Williamsburg Library. Address is 515 Scotland St, 23185.
This is an organizational meeting to discuss how we want to get started and what we're going to do. So if you live in the area, can read music and play at a fairly proficient level and are interested in participating in such a group, come on by.
We will be alternating meeting out in Williamsburg and somewhere here int eh Va Beach/Norfolk area in the future.
Wow! That's great news! I live in Williamsburg and will be at the library Saturday, but maybe not until 1:15. I have been playing about 9 years, but my skill level is only maybe around a 4th or 5th years player. I used to play fiddle tunes exclusively, but lately play mostly choro, jazz standards, and simple classical. I can read music and have both a mandolin and mandola. I like to listen to bluegrass but can't play it (it's too fast for me).
Can you use me?
Please answer directly to alanhoward@cox.net.
This is exciting!

Alan, come on out. We'll definitely need a mandola player.
Chris, it's lookin like it's just going to be you and me. Jim has a prior obligation and Brian is moving.
Finally! Woo Hoo! Can't wait to see it get off the ground.

I'm glad you guys are off and running with this. I'm moving, but I'll still have ties in the area and will definitely be coming back to visit. I look forward to the day when I get to watch you perform! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hey Folks!
I just accepted a new position (like, yesterday) at a company located 20 miles east of Richmond. We will be relocating from Arizona over the next month, or so. My wife worked at Colonial Williamsburg a few years back in their costume shop, so we are looking to find a new home close to that area.
I played Bass professionally for a few years. I also play mando, mandola, and really enjoy octave mandolin/bouzouki when playing with the Irish Trad association here, in Az. Being involved in something like this would prol'y be a GREAT excuse to buy the mandocello I've been spyin' on! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Anyway, I 'Was' a proficient reader back in my school days, lost it, and have been working on it rather diligently here in the last few months. Still a bit slow. If I can preview any charts I am confident I'd be able to hold my own...
Once I'm out there would anyone mind if I tagged along to see how it would work out? Even if this situation didn't work I am looking to meet players in the area.

Shaun,
Wow, you and the E. Va. boys are always on top of the Mando scene. #This sounds great, I'm not up to your level of playing and can't read a lick of music, but I'll keep on picking. #I hope this will work out for all of you. #Hope to see this group in person someday soon.
Best,

Thanks Wheeler. We're trying to keep mando music alive and well around here. So far so good I think. We'll definitely be posting performance dates once we get to that point.
