I am currently listening to L'importanza di esser Franco op.198 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco on Italian radio (http://www.radio.rai.it/player/player.cfm?Q_CANALE=6). It's an Italian opera based on The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde!!! (One of my favorites.) It is just accompanied by a piano, and most of score consists of quotes from Verdi, Mozart, Bach, Dvorak, et al. Part of the accompaniment paraphrases the mandolin part from Don Giovanni, which gets it a mention here. Someone needs to orchestra this (and actually use a mandolin.)

That dude wrote some quirky stuff. Sometimes I find it really intriguing; sometimes it pandered to Segovia too much.
