I took delivery of a "The Loar" mandolin yesterday. Flawless quality, but my old Aria F5 is louder. I have The Loar sitting infront of my home theater's sub woofer trying to make it louder. I got a nice case for it with a built in hygrometer to measure humidity. Overall a nice instrument.

What does the sub-woofer do???
It suppose to help accelerate the opening up process of the top via sonic vibrations through the wood.

A "subwoofer" is really a tandem woofer, it doesn't provide the really low frequencies that a true subwoofer would, it just locates a normal woofer away from the tweeters so you can have smaller speakers. Bass being non directional, you can place the woofer where you want it. Either way, I doubt it does much to open up an mandolin. If it did, you would want to place the mandolin eight feet away from the woofer, as bass has long wavelengths and it takes that far to focus.

I bought a "The Loar" last August. The fit and finish are first rate and the playability is very nice but there is hardly any volume. It mostly just hangs on the wall and looks pretty. I'm thinking of trying the MandoVoodoo process by Steve Perry or maybe the Roger Siminoff mando fix up to see if more volume can be squeezed out of it.

Last night I removed the pick guard and the volume increased. The mechanics underneath the pick guard was actually deadening the top vibrations.
I want to get a Poe.

HMM, I think I'll give that a try.

I removed the pick guard on my 'campfire' PacRim mandolin, and its volume and tone increased significantly. It's still 'tinny' compared to my Silver Angel, but much better than initially. But then, I don't think those mass-production facilities care much if the pick guards 'deaden' things at all. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

After a couple months of constantly putting The Loar in front of the sub woofer, I can honestly say that the volume of the instrument has increased. It did little so far to bring out the lower end, but the overall volume is a lot better. I'll keep doing it.

It's like a buddy of mine that says the way he keeps his wife happy about his poker night is to tell her how much he won, but never how much he lost (two completely different tallies http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ).

That's the Atlantic City story in New Jersey. You walk in the door and say I hit a $250.00 Jackpot last night but you never mention that you dumped it back in plus another $200.00. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Lets see...according to your first post you took delivery on Jan.18...today is Feb14...My math says less than a month...What math are you using as I would like to get two months interest on my savings with your math...

I guess when you live in the Tundra you subconsciously feel the need to "speed" things up a bit in order to get to Spring quicker. I need sun man, it's effecting my brain!!!!! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I had a similar feeling when I spent a year in Odessa, TX one week.
Congrats on the new axe.
