What's the best way to remove the finish on my mandolin neck? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Sandpaper!
What I did (on my F) was used some coarse (240 or something?) and then did some wet sandpaper. I didn't take the finish off (well, I did in one small little part) so I didn't worry about putting anything on to protect the wood itself, but some people recommend you do that (some oils I think are good).
I also have a mandobird, and for that I used a coarse sponge (the green part of the green/yellow scotchbrites) and that actually worked well too. I think the sandpaper makes it look a little nicer since it doesn't leave much in the way of streaks after you wet sand it.

there is also, like the green nylon scratch pad, but with abrasive impreg, brown, at hardware shops.
I buy them for heavy duty scorch cleanup on the SS frypan, too.

I use a sharp scraper. Then increasingly fine paper, finally 0000 steel wool. Then aniline dye in alcohol followed by light coats of boiled linseed oil until sealed.
There was a long topic on this. A serach would find it here. (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=12;t=14086;hl=christine)

I just finished up refinishing my neck again tonight. I took the finish off about 2 years ago with steel wool, but I should have used sandpaper. Today, I sanded the tung oil out, starting with about 600 grit sandpaper, and worked the sandpaper all the way to 2000 grit. You can get that at an auto parts store. Then I coated it with tung oil a few times, let it dry, and then polished it out with a leather strap. Ahhh... It's SO smooth I can hardly stand it...

After a few moments of prayer and deep thought, I DID IT!! I had to stop once because I started to hyperventalate but as soon as the room stopped spinning and I could focus again, I saw that it wasn't as big a deal as I thought.
I didn't take it all the way to the wood but it's close. I LOVE IT! Thanks to everyone for the advise.
