Oh man, one of my heroes....

Details here (http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/06/10/obit.ray.charles.ap/index.html)...

Mando content:

"Charles released "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Volumes 1 and 2" in the early '60s, a big switch from his gospel work. It included "Born to Lose," "Take These Chains From My Heart (And Set Me Free)" and "I Can't Stop Loving You," some of the biggest hits of his career. #

He made it a point to explore each medium he took on. Country sides were sometimes pop-oriented, while fiddle, mandolin, banjo and steel guitar were added to "Wish You Were Here Tonight" in the '80s."

the most inspirational musical moment i have ever experienced was seeing ray sing "you don't know me" on some tv show in the early 90's. as he was singing, tears were streaming down his face. can you imagine singing a song thousands of time over the years and still putting that much emotion into it?
ray charles is on my top ten of all-time great musicians. i sure am glad i got to see him once.

Ray Charles' country music is some of my all-time favorites in the genre. Of all his music, that's the period that I loved the most.
He didn't just have soul, he was soul and he brought all that pain and joy to that music. I loved when he wore that "Big Texan" type of suit, somehow it fit him well.

Ray Charles is a musical icon. I was very sad to hear this news. Also Reagan, whatever you though of him politically, he was also larger than life. Two big-time American icons and personalities have passed on.

I heard the news coming back to the sticks from FQMS in Louisville this afternoon. Bye Ray and thanks for all the great music you left us!

Yes it is a shame that two of America's icons are gone. But I have yet to see any mention of Ray Charles on the news http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

i saw ray charles perform to a packed house at carnegie hall in 1962(ish). the audience was silent, relaxed and very much paying attention. in the middle of one of his songs, a lady from way up there in the furthermost recesses of the hall let out a long, rapturous, very audible sigh and everybody - including the great man himself - had a smile on their face.

Yep, so many happy childhood memories of mom listening to Ray as she did the housework each weekend. Thanks Ray.

Gave up my seat at Preservation hall [New Orleans] one night so that Mr. Charles would have a place to sit. Literally spent the night sitting on the floor at the feet of the master.
One of the greatest nights of my life.
