The armed gentleman need not be a Mando player- The b*njo could elicit this response from anyone with even a semblance of hearing. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Mike,
I'm not sure the intent in the photograph is to indicate an assault on the banjo, or even be humorous. I've seen many photos from that age and often, one of the subjects will be brandishing a weapon or an instrument... more often a weapon esp. in the Civil War era photos. I can't recall reading why folks posed the way they did but it seems to be a particularly common photo idiom from the time.

Perhaps the gentleman on the right is being forced to play the banjo, under the threat of that revolver, by the crazed banjo fan on the left?

I think you are on the right track. Perhaps the guy with the banjo is a mandolin player and what we're looking at are some of the oldest surviving blackmail photos. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

See that's what I thought! It's like those western's where the gunslinger shoots at the young fella's feet, saying "Dance, greenhorn, dance!!"

i have instruments and weapons and readily pose with both, i think it is natural to show off your artillery.

Both the 6-shooter and the 5-stringer can be dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands.

Note that the man on the left is not smiling. He's probably telling the B*joist to knock it off.

Fantastic. I thought he was gonna play them boys a tune and scare 'em off, but did the right thing and put 'em out of their misery.

I think I saw on Banjo's headstock that it was a Winchester. ( Winchester Model 1873 Short Rifle (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/Winchester_Model_1873_Short_Rifle_1495.jpg) with a modified level action and sawed off stock)

The banjo's a tenor, but the guy with the cap gun sings base. A tenor banjo is a great weapon in it's own right.

Is Bass base?

Probably not a cap gun. Looks like an Iver Johnson "Safety Automatic" revolver, manufactured from 1894 to 1941. One of these was used to shoot President McKinley in 1901, putting Teddy Roosevelt in the presidency.

Yeah, like bluegrass doesn't need banjos...

When did I last hear a NEW banjo joke?

BTW:

Q: how do you get two mandolin players to play in tune?

A: Shoot one...

Something tells me that my banjo is going to undergo a few modifications to give it a little more bite. # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
