View Full Version : Mandolin Symposim - Last Row Call
I figured I start a list with everybody who is going, the date they are to arrive in CA, and if you want to be contacted. If you arrive early and want to be contacted send me your cell-phone number and I will send an email to all who would like to be contacted a week or 2 before leaving with the list and numbers. Let's keep an on going list. Copy and paste the list in your message and add your name so we have 1 list at the end.You do not have to use your name if you are not comfortable with it. -Displaying it, I can't help what you
were named.

I'm seeing the Mutal Admiration Society show in L.A. on July 31st, and then I'm driving up to Santa Cruz the next day. You guys know we have a message board specifically for the symposium, right? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm doing the same as Hannah.
Where is this message board specifically for the symposium?
I sent ruffo an email a week ago and haven't heard back from him. I still don't know if I'm in the advanced class or not. Also, I have several questions:
Is there some sort of orientation/info packet? I mean where on the UCSC campus are we supposed to go? Is there going to be some place to park?
Can the sessions be recorded?
Are there going to be classroom materials handed out?
I've never been to any sort of camp like this, other than band camp in 8th grade, so I've got a lot of questions.
-Jeff
Jeff, email me and I'll pass on the info to you, as probably anybody who's going to can. And you can just call Ruffo and ask him.
Oh yeah, ya'll can contact me if you want; I'll be driving over from Reno that Sunday.

Hey Sam, I'm doing the same! I'm flying to San Jose on Sunday, but I'm leaving on the 8th. Then I'll be seeing MAS on the 10th in Cleveland as well!
I'm flying into SanFrancisco on the 30th and leaving on the 8th. I really need to get away from NY for a while. I'm leaving work early today to go to GreyFox for 5 days of enjoyment and pickin'.

the beechland ballroom is my favorite venue in the whole wide world. i usually see bands of a louder variety there. it's 2.5 hr one way trip from pittsburgh.
my month gets even better. the nite before i leave from the symposium i have the choice of seeing a one-off reunion gig the david long/ben hartlige/ben opie's old band, "coal train" #(you know david long is a teaching assistant at the symposium?) or seeing onidea (a great modern psychedelic band from nyc) play in the parking lot of pittsburgh filmmakers. then there's the donna the buffalo gig later in the month. #it almost makes up for missing the nearby sonic youth shows while we're at the symposium.
see you guys in santa cruz!

Hey Sam, you gonna be at the MAS show on the 10th then? Speaking of Donna the Buffalo, my aunt is a huge fan and last year went on some sort of cruise with the band. She sent me some of their stuff, but I just cant get into it! Anyways, they're gonna be close to me in September for a bluegrass festival (who'da thunk it- bluegrass in Toledo!). Its only 20 mins away, so I think I'm gonna go and give them another listen.

yes i'll be the MAS show on the 10th. got my ticket online.
donna is a live thing. their discs just don't do it, imho. when they're "on" they're wonderful, when they're not, not. it's kind of like seeing the dead, if you ever had that experience. the one guitarist jim miller & the fiddle player tara nevins have a really raw old time band & for me the're a highlight of merlefest every year.
so did you get the mando yet?
sam
Im not going, cause I didnt think my mandolin would be done by then, but the new mandolin arrives thursday, and now I have not tickets to this.

We'll have to make sure to see each other on the 10th. I think Jerry Garcia died when I was 16 or 17, so no, I never got to see them. Maybe Donna is just too raw for me, but I'm gonna give it another listen. Only live this time! No, no mando yet. Ben is pushing it right to the end, July 30th. It really isnt his fault though. The wood I had choosen had a defect, so we had to get more. Plus I had a hard time choosing an inlay design, so that took more time.

Well it's time! I just put fresh strings on last night and
am mostly packed. It's alot easier packin' for this kind of a trip compared to a festival. I'm leaving tomorrow morning. YOW! I Probably check out the Giant vs Cardinal game friday night.
If anybody is there early sunday or saturday. Feel free to contact me on my cell# 845-641-5188. This is the only site I would think of post my number. This post will self destruct at the end of the symposium.

My mom and I are arriving Saturday night in Santa Cruz, but as of yet have nowhere to stay. Do you guys know of any hotels or anything near by that might have a vacant room?
Not sure...but if you can't find a place, camping is always an option. That is, if it's not already filled up.
Drivin up tomorrow from Ventura County. Glad it's somewhat close. See ya'll there. Happy traveling.
