Sitting and listening to Old Crow Medicine Show and wondering why I haven't heard this before. What did you get as a gift that was new and notable?

Got a few, including "Road That Never Ends" by Mountain Heart, "The Road With No End" by LRB, "Higher Ground" by The Andy Rau Band and a Ricky Scaggs & The Whites CD. I forgot the name and it is in the car right now. All are entertaining, but I don't have a favorite yet. The Andy Rau Band is from the West Coast and definitely different-sounding bluegrass; more like a Beach Boys-influenced bluegrass; not bad at all, just different.

I must say that I have Detour CD "Radio Hill" and have listened to it so much! It is great. I also got Mike Sumners (Detour's banjo player cd Winds of Wakefield) it is just a good...I think this group has it all.... fresh sound and perfect harmony!!!!
Jeff Rose on the "Weins" mandolin has made me really want one and someday I will!
Check them out you will think the sound is much like Nickle Creek but I think a lot more bluegrass than new age! Shawn Stiner http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I finally have to respond to this notion..an album, record, or recording are all just collections of info or data, viz., record book, court records, photo album etc. A compact disk is just the medium, what it contains is the record of the data, i.e. the music in this case. I think that it is perfectly correct to refer to a CD as a record.

I agree. LPs, cassettes, 8-tracks, CDs, DVDs, or MP3s are just formats. A collection of recorded music intended to be listened to in a considered order is still an album or a record . . . to me, anyway.
And the best records we got this Christmas include
-- Songs for Christmas, the wildly entertaining Sufjan Stevens five-CD album with lots of fun ephemera
-- Little Mo' McCoury, Ron McCoury's record of fun music intended for kids (but not strictly kid's music)
-- African Virtuoses, a reissue of some classic Guinean guitar-ensemble tracks
-- Krauss and Plant's Raising Sand
-- Torta Bulgarska, a very cool tambura-driven Bulgarian-jazz fusion project by Trio Mopmu. Very hot picking on an 8-string instrument typically used for backup in trad Bulgarian music.
Lots of new albums to listen to in the new year.

OK, a little record history. Originally, "phonogragh record" referred to a wax cylinder recording. When the "new" 78 RPM discs came out, the term was eventually applied to them, as well. The first record albums, were, literally: Multi-disc 78 album sets, with the sleeves in a binder like a book. When the "new" LPs came out, the increased playing time allowed them to hold all of the music that would previously only fit in an album set, so the term "album" got transferred, as well. There is nothing wrong with referring to a CD as a record or an album.

chopaholic - I have not listened to the Plant Krauss CD. Would you say what was unpleasant? I am not doubting you, just curious. I have heard both good and bad reviews.

I am not a Zep Head and I usually don't care much for collaborations anyway, so I had no desire to hear it at all until I saw chopaholic's post and went and listened to all the 30 second clips on Amazon.com. One song - "Your Long Journey" made me want to hear the rest of it. The other 12 tracks left me quite underwhelmed. Admittedly, the entire song could be better than the clip, but I would not buy this one to find out.

Maybe I'm being unfair, but I just didn't have that "I can't wait to play that again" feeling. On the other hand, I got Levon Helm's Dirt Farmer and have almost worn it out. I should have stayed on topic and listed that as my favorite CD and let others decide on Plant and Krauss. Maybe it was just the lack of mandolin! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

HEY, I remember them, as a kid I had an album of 4/5 discs with Stanley Holloway reading Peter and the Wolf, along with the music by http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
My favourite new CD..... I downloaded a recording of "Ollabelle", to make a record of it on my computer and I find that it gets a lot of play, very cool stuff. And I find out yesterday that the mandola player and singer is none other than Amy Helm, Levon's daughter. I better get "Dirt Farmer", I read that she plays a big part on it.

I wouldn't call it unpleasant, but I would call it boring. I bought one song off itunes, and haven't felt the need to even hear that one again. Glad I didn't buy all of it.

Ya know, this recording is going to go down in history as being so influential in so many ways...
For one, it's basically an all acoustic recording of old-timey tunes with huge drums that are very loud in the mix, that works....
Try pulling that one off... # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

I really wanted to like the Plant & Krauss album because their voices sound tremendous together. I'm not sure whether the problem lies in the material, the arrangements, or both, but the album does nothing for me, either. Maybe they'll do a follow-up with Rick Rubin producing and get it right.

OK so it's not a new album (apparently it was done in like 2002) but it didn't even know it existed. I receieve Mark O'Connor: A 30-year retrospective this Christmas. Mark O'Connor on violin, Bryan Sutton on guitar, Byron House on bass and Chris Thile (my favorite!) on mandolin. Two CD's and two hours of a live concert. It's awesome.

"Stars in My Crown" by Jorma Kaukonen
I bought this cd this summer, base on a review from Sing Out! magazine, and I've been playing it a lot. Many people know about Jorma Kaukonen, but I didn't.
Beautiful songs, with some string arrangements I like a lot (eg. #1); and really nice mandolin playing by Jorma's band member, Barry Mitterhoff.
Doc and Dawg (cd), The Concert For Bangladesh (dvd).
WOO HOOO! Leon Russell ROCKS!
