I'd like to get a "trainer" device to use while learning songs. #The Tascam CD-GT2 and CD-VT2 equipment are the only ones I've checked out so far. #My understanding is that they allow you to slow down music without altering the notes, loop sections of the song, cancel out the part you're learning so you can play along, and other stuff. #Has anyone used a trainer or has a recommendation?
Thank you.

I have the Tascam and love it. Does everything you could ask for.
You can jack in earphones or small PC speakers for output.
And a BIG plus - it gets you away from the computer!
I don't think you'll be disappointed with one.

I think you may have misinterpreted the question:#Both of the models that "dchasar" is inquiring about are made by Tascam. #They have several versions of the same machine, each geared toward a particular musical range. #I've not used any of them, though my violin instructor has been nagging me to buy one for some time now.
However, I CAN tell you that the model recommended for use with the violin (which has the same range as the mandolin) is the Vocal Trainer. #I'm not certain as to why one model would be more appropriate than another, but I suspect it has to do with the ability to isolate a given instrument's range, allowing you to "notch out" the soloist so you can play along with existing CDs.
The range of the mandolin/violin is similar to that of the human voice.

Indeed I did. My apologies.
I have the CD-GT1 and have no complaints with it. I am not familiar with the other model.
