I recently purchased a pick guard/finger rest from Doug and I am about ready to install it. #The directions basically just show that you need to drill two holes in the neck to accept the two "nails" in the finger board. #Is this all that is needed to make it steady? #I see some pickguards with an additional clamp near the bottom to help hold it up. Is that necessary? #If so, where do you get it from?

Wider finger-rests, have the rim bracket .

[the ones that partially sit above the lower F hole]

I got my Tortisoid pickguard from Steve (Cumberland Acoustics) Smith,
of the larger style, he supplied a piece of matching plastic, a block of wood to glue under the pickguard to fit the rim bracket's metal parts.

Another part that is used on some mandolins , like A40/50,
is sold as a Les Paul guitar pick guard bracket
for which there is a screw and nut holding the plastic onto the metal.
used that sort on my archtop mandola, as the dome is rather tall so little space beneath for the wood glued mounting scheme.

older instruments, such as my 'A' have one pin, a stiffening strip at the top edge , and the rim clamp.

I have been considering fitting a second pin 80 years later to better support it.

kind of rotates a wee bit on the one nail.

If the pick guard reaches to the edge of the instrument a padded block could be added to sit on the binding. I have a home made pickguard for my Mid Missouri which has a self adhesive Cork disk sitting directly over an X brace, so it doesn't dampen any sound.
