Cafe member Rob Coleman (AKA Avanti) threw a 70th birthday party for Frank this last weekend and what a party it was! I had so much fun jamming with Frank although I think Frank has more fun than anyone when he's playing. He put such a "hurt" on his mandolin that he had to put a Band-aid on the headstock.

I'll never forget that evening, and either will Rob's neighbors! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Here's Frank and Rob.

The guy with the flute was great. Frank kept calling him in and he could just pick it up and play something tasteful. He was a fine musician. Frank really had a blast with him.

Yeah, the guy with the flute lives a few doors down from me. The guy playing the fiddle is Bill Hinckley, who is quite a manddolin player himself. He and his wife Judy Larson have been playing acousitc music around here for well over 30 years.

It was really great to have Frank around for an entire week. We did a lot of picking, visited Hans Brentrup, Frank sat in with a great band at a local venue, we had a productive workshop, a really fun party, a radio interview, and we recorded some of Frank's new tunes for possible future release. Here's a link to more photos from the party:

Keith was there with his new Rose mandolin, as well as Hans Brentrup and his wife Maureen, Bill James of course, Phil Nusbaum who hosts the local bluegrass radio program and many other friends and musicians. A good time was had by all. We definitely have the best neighbors in the world. Not only did they host the party, but they let Frank stay in their basement apartment during his visit. And they say they're ready to do it again!

Hello.

Rob, I am getting worried about you. You are starting to look like Frank.

Re. Bill Hinckley: he is a fine player. He was originally from St. Louis, where I live. I used to run into him up at Winfield, Kansas, now and then, where he and Judy played some beautiful guitar duets.

What a week! Thanks for the pix. Frank Wakefield is waaay cool. I hope he comes east sometime and does a workshop in Maryland or near Philly. Get any of his last two albums, "Don't Lie to Me" or "Midnight on the Mandolin" (or something like that) on Tom Mindte's Patuxent Records. His vocals are rough (he has other singers, and he sings better than Bob Dylan does right now) but man the mandolin playing and overall writing is great, vital stuff.

So that was Bill Hinckley? Dang, I've heard his name locally quite a bit and I had no idea who he was. Here I am playing with him and didn't know it. He's a great singer and player, and good fun too. He and Frank really sounded great together.

Life's been kinda boring since that party ended...sigh #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
