I'm looking for a good solid, cast tailpiece to replace the flimsy rattling one on my MK. #I know the Allen makes string changes easy; #does the Weber as well? #I can't recall if it has a cover or not. #Any info is appreciated. Also, are there any cheaper, high quality alternatives? #I've seen a few here on the cafe, but some look cheesy in design.

I got the one with the built in arm rest. Kind of cool looking and functional. Tell Vern it is for an MK and to bull nose the radius. It makes it much more comfortable. The tailpiece itself is cast and the radius armrest is solid ebony. Really looks rich. Those guys at sound to earth will get it just right for you.
If you want just the tailpice they have that too. The W looks like an M!!(upsidedown)

The Allen is what MK uses as a factory upgrade. Can be ordered(backordered currently) from their web site
check out keith newell's tailpieces- solid, beautiful and reasonably priced for incredible workmanship. they are also designed in a way that makes them easy to string up. i know he is a regular on the cafe so maybe he'll chime in.

I can't give you the results of a comparison (since I haven't done one http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ), but I recently upgraded my Freshwater to an Allen cast tailpiece. I am very happy with the improvements in looks, tone, and sustain; the difference was subtle in the latter two categories, but it was a change for the better nevertheless.

Is there any website to check out the Newell tailpiece?

Keith is a builder as well, so I was able to get his URL (http://www.newellmandolins.com/) from the MC builder db.

Thanks Ira for the plug. How's the new mandolin holding up? Has the sound opened any? Just a note, the pictures on the web-site doesn't show any gold plated ones but here is a pic of then in gold.
