View Full Version : Schönberg
So -- I was looking for information about Schönberg's Weihnachtsmusik and found myself on the Arnold Schönberg Center's website.
They have a feature called the AS Center Jukebox upon which you can listen to what seems to be his complete works (haven't taken the time to count #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif #)
Anyway, for works with mandolin go to "chamber music" and scroll down to the Serenade op. 24
and also to "arrangements" where you'll find:
Luigi Denza: Funiculi, Funicula,
Sioly: Weil i a alter Drahrer bin
Franz Schubert: Ständchen
Sans mandolin (or I should say "ohne mandoline") you'll find the Weihnachtsmusik under "chamber music" for some beautiful seasonal music.

Super! #Thank you, Jim. #It's at:
http://www.schoenberg.at/
and it's got tons of fun stuff, including performances of his works conducted by AS in the 1920s and '30s. #Wonderful!

PS: Don't miss the link "Schönberg on Youtube".
Thanks for the link, Bruce. I knew I was forgetting something.

Ah, I used to play my LP of the Op. 24 Serenade as dinner music in my college days. My roommates hated it. I bought a score 30 years ago, and have still never had an opportunity to perform it.

I love the Serenade -- if you ever get the opportunity to play it, I'll be happy to come and play the guitar part. The only time I performed it, I did the mandolin. It was a blast to play. Great piece.

thanks - had no idea.
think i'll paddle on back where my toes touch the bottom.
Hi guys,
I know Hugo recorded Op.24 at some point but don't knoew who with or when. Also I recorded the op.27 with the London Sinfonietta and a choir (think they went by the name of the Simon Jolly singers) - conductor was THE Robert Craft - we recorded it at Abbey Road studios last June (06 I think). I haven't heard it yet. For those of you not familiar with this work its for SATB only for 1st 3 movemnts. The singers are joined in final movemnet by a little instrumental ensemble including a slightly manic mandolin part. Its a fun piece to play.
All the best
Ali

Ali, Hugo recorded Op. 24 twice, and I have them both! One has been reeissued on CD. I don't have the information with me, and it will probably be after Christmas before I have a chance to look it up.
I met Robert Craft earlier this year. I was hired to play at the wedding for one of his relatives!

I finally found both of my recordings. The first was with the Melos Ensemble of London in 1962, directed by Bruno Maderna. It's on a L'Oiseau-Lyra LP, OL 250.
The second was with the London Sinfonietta in 1973, conducted by David Atherton. I don't have the original vinyl, but the CD re-issue is on London 425 626-2. That is a 1990 CD, which also appears to be out of print.
