I love the sound of Jim and Jesse, I also love Monroe and Grisman. F is the one I also see Ricky and Ronny and other favorites play. But the way cool sound of the hillbilly McReynolds is on par. Is F cosmetic hype? Is A truer sound and more bang fer da buck.

Yes, No, Maybe, It Depends. There are those that would fight and die for one side or the other. Seems kind of stupid to me. I have both, like them both.

It all boils down to which A? Which F? Take the same wood (theoretically) graduate the tops and back the same way--F holes in both tops--same neck joint at the same fret--make an F and an A, and I'd wager that they'd sound about the same. The F ornamentation is cosmetic and has little effect on the tone of the instrument. The F model sure is beatiful though!

Go with crawdad - I think he's got it right. Then again, I've only played them and am not a builder.
