I have been learning bluegrass for 10 months. No prior stringed instrument background. I started with "Mandolin Primer For Beginners - Beginning Bluegrass Mandolin" by Bert Casey with accompanying DVD. Topics include chords, chop, hammer on, slide, pull-offs and doublestops, plus tunes. I mainly read tab from the book to learn instead of the DVD. The book plus DVD methodology seems to work for me. I have Sally Goodin, Old Joe Clark and Salt Creek left to learn, then I will have completed the book.

Can anyone help me with a good next step book/DVD for Bluegrass? Thank you.

...you can't go wrong with Butch Baldassari's 'Bluegrass Mandolin Workshop'...it's the logical next step for you in covering some common tunes as well as the techniques used to construct tunes and licks. You won't be sorry with this one!

I second Butch's workshop DVD. Butch in a good teacher and does a good job in explaining how to improvise a BG break. His explanations would #be an extension of what you already learned.

I can recomend Butch's "You can play bluegrass mando" vol 1 and 2. You can save a few bucks if you buy the set and they're easy to follow imo.
