Varnish final verdict

I am hoping for a final verdict in regards to the best way to finish a mandolin, but I expect I will get several opinions. In regards to tone quality only, what finish will give me the best repsonse? Also, what is the difference between oil and spirit varnish?

Primarily the solvent used. Spirit is alcohol based and oil is oil based.

There really is no BEST finish, just different. A very thin finish will sound most like the instrument with no finish. The thicker or harder the finish is the more it effects the vibrating parts.
