what's an avatar?

i'm aware of it being religious in nature but how does the word apply to mandolins?

On some message boards, users can select a thumbnail type image to "represent" them. #It usually appears under the name to the left of the posts. #Since this board is using a canned message board software package, the reference to avatar appears but I don't think is activated.

I was wondering that too - it must be what I see if I browseo other forums such as those on computers and minidiscs etc....normally not photos of said individual but some graphic. ( I found them distracting actually. )
