View Full Version : Two point instruments
In general terms what are the differences between a 2 point instrument and the "a"s and "f"s?
Beside appearance. Tone? Volume?

Generally, higher than A, lower than F.
There is no sound difference reliably attributable to the points and/or scrolls.

A two-point will be a little more than an A style, and a lot less than a F style. It's all about labor. It takes a lot longer to make that F scroll.

A Phoenix two point I saw once (not mine) was absolutely the most beautiful instrument. I think a two point has great, clean styling.

I picked a 2 point over the F's I used to have. I feel like I got more tone for less money. I was going to get an A as my second but decided to go ahead and get a second 2 point.
I say go for tone before you go for looks. Get the best mandolin you can get for your money no matter what the style is.

Me too, and here are some older teenagers. Regarding tone, the cylinderbacks are very rich and loud and the Lyon and Healy is considered one of the best mandolins for classical music.

Django,
I love the curlicue scratchplate inlay on the right hand Vega.

I've always loved the look of the Rigel Jethro...and especially Jethrine. Pete Langdell really made a beautiful design there and the ones I've played sound terrific! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I agree that the tone of the instrument is the first priority. Scrolls and points are more or less window dressing. That said, I have a BRW 2 point that I love primarily for the feel of the neck, the tonal characteristics, and great projection. #It's the wood and construction that creates the tone and volume though. I just personally like the 2 point look as opposed to the typical scroll.

I'm a big fan of two-pointers. #Tone-wise, I don't expect there to be much difference, but I dig the aesthetic.
Here's my two-point OM...

I like two-points a lot. #This Phil Crump B-II was my first, but it won't be my last!

I have always loved that Rigel Jethro look. Oh man..., it's the only thing that gets me close to MAS. I can't (not willing to) part with my Fern though, so I'm out of luck.
What's the going rate on a used Rigel Jethro these days? Any sound clips of that bad boy?

Sorry that's sideways, I tired to delete and re-post but couldn't delete. Apologies to those with stiff necks and those who get them.

I wonder too, not that I am wanting to sell it but I'm curious to see what Rigels will sell for as the years go by, the Jethro in particular of course.
Mine is #1 you might say. Here it is (http://www.rigelmandolin.com/) on the old website.
It went to IBMA and other such events and I bought it used through our own Mandohack Ted.
Sorry no sound clips right now.

Contact Pete Langdell. He might be willing to build one custom for you. The old Rigel site has this on the home page.
"Although Rigel Instruments, LTD closed its doors in August 2006, founder Pete Langdell continues to be available for consultations, repairs, replacement parts and custom work."

There was one for sale for $3750 in the classifieds back in September, as referenced in Ted's archives.

JG, I hear the Rigels aren't going up in price yet, but it seems that they are getting cloer to the original price. I've seen some 'A' models sell for what I think is not too far under the original sellign price.
Let me know if you have an interest in selling or trading. I have a few options I can consider.

Many 2-point shapes aren't simply a couple points added to an A-style body. #Despite the perspective in this photo - the 2-point Old Wave is slightly behind the A-style and so looks smaller - you can see that the the body curvatures of the two instruments are unique and won't superimpose.
